Operational excellence is a core theme for the Meetings Industry Association (mia) and we are committed to promoting sustainability.

Concern for the environment and promoting a broader sustainability agenda are integral to the mia's professional activities and the management of the organisation. We aim to follow and champion good sustainability practice, to reduce the environmental impacts of all our activities and to help our members to do the same.

Our Values

  • To comply with, and exceed where practicable, all applicable legislation, regulations and codes of practice.
  • To integrate sustainability considerations into our business decisions.
  • To encourage our members to integrate sustainability considerations into their business decisions.
  • To ensure all staff are fully aware of our Sustainability Policy and are committed to implementing and improving it.
  • To minimise the impact on sustainability of all office and transportation activities.
  • To continually strive to improve our sustainability performance.

The Steps We Take

Travel and Meetings

  • Travel by train to meetings apart from in exceptional circumstances.
  • Efficiently time our meetings to avoid multiple trips.
  • Reduce the need for our staff to travel, by supporting alternative working arrangements, including home working.

This policy applies to all events hosted by the mia, for example, events we host and pay for. In particular, we request our host venues:

  • Supply their policy outlining their commitment to reduce single-use plastics.
  • Water is made available in glass bottles or jugs and not plastic.
  • No plastic disposable cups or other single-use items are used.

We acknowledge we have limited influence over third-party events we may attend but do not organise, such as trade shows where we exhibit. While we cannot control the decisions of these parties, we commit to educate them of our policy and encourage them to align their operating practices accordingly.

Purchase of equipment and consumption of resources

  • Minimise our use of paper and other office consumables and actively reduce waste.
  • We ask our staff not to order single-use plastic office consumables
  • Use electronic mail and website communications wherever practical and possible.
  • As far as possible, arrange for the reuse or recycling of office waste, including paper and plastics, computer supplies and redundant equipment.
  • Reduce the energy consumption of office equipment by purchasing energy-efficient equipment and practice good housekeeping.
  • Purchase electricity from a supplier committed to renewable energy.
  • Ensure that timber furniture, and any other timber products, are recycled or from well-managed, sustainable sources and are Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified.

This policy will be reviewed quarterly by the mia's Chief Executive.
