General Manager of Grovefield House Hotel and the Hickstead Hotel discusses the industry and the value of mia membership.

What is your job title?
General Manager of Grovefield House Hotel and the Hickstead Hotel.

Describe your day to day duties
I ensure the smooth day to day running of both hotels to ensure all of our customer’s needs are met working closely with the management teams in each unit. This involves clear communication and planning ensuring all objectives, targets both daily and long term are met. Staff Motivation and development of both hotel teams is a key factor of my role whilst also ensuring constant networking with both internal and external clients.

How long have you worked in the sector?
32 years

When and why did you decide to join the mia?
Bagden Hall joined the mia in 2006 and we have always found it useful to be involved as it gives us the opportunity to network with the meetings industry and share ideas.

What do you value most about your mia membership?
It has raised our profile within the very competitive conference and events sector.

What is exciting you about the meetings and events industry at the moment?
The increase and variety of technology in use for events means more people from different times zones and locations can be introduced and involved. Events that are held at Grovefield and the Hickstead incorporate more and more technology to try and engage attendees further. Team building is a growing activity for the two hotels due to the large outdoor grounds the hotels are situated on.

What do you think are the greatest challenges that the industry is currently facing?
Video conferencing and other technologies are bringing into question whether people actually need to attend an event in person. The time out of the office and the associated costs can be negated by dialling in on Skype. Conference and event organisers are demanding the most up-to-date technology, and it is easier for newer and more modern hotels to meet those requirements rather than retrofit in older properties. Maintaining the standards for the quality of service and ensuring the food on offer is of a high quality and interesting to attendees is also a challenge.
