In the spotlight: David Willmin

With the meetings and events industry full of exceptional talent, it's important to recognise the valuable range of insight we have available within the mia network. We caught up with Sales Director of Ashridge House, David Willmin to discuss the industry and the value of mia membership.

What is your job title?

Sales Director at Ashridge House in Hertfordshire

Describe your day to day duties

Client expectations are continually evolving and it’s important that we continue to deliver and exceed expectations.  I work incredibly closely with the events team and delivery teams and continuously listen out to hear what prospective and current clients are asking for. Making sure my team have the knowledge and tools to sell and deliver whilst removing any barriers is key to ensuring KPI’s are met.

How long have you worked in the sector?

 17 years

When and why did you decide to join the mia?

Ashridge House joined the MIA approximately 10 years ago. The association allows us to network and learn from one another which ultimately helps us to improve our service.

What is exciting you about the meetings and events industry at the moment?

Event venues are popping up in the most unorthodox of places and with client expectations continually increasing venues must continue to evolve. Thinking differently about how event spaces are used and creating spaces allowing for spontaneous interaction is becoming ever more important.  Mindfulness has been a key topic in recent years, and I believe it will be ever more important in 2019.  Creating an environment which promotes mindfulness through the latest food trends, evolving technology and creative but purposeful meeting spaces will allow for a more productive event.

What do you think are the greatest challenges that the industry is currently facing?

Whilst the outcome of the Brexit negotiations are still unclear, I do believe that recruiting top talent within the sector will be tougher than ever. Which is why investing in staff development and providing team members with the opportunity to grow within the business is vital.  Likewise, having a graduate program which provides the tools to upskill the workforce will allow venues to fast track the rising stars.
