In the spotlight: Andrew Papworth, St Martin-in-the-Fields

With the meetings and events industry full of exceptional talent, it's important to recognise the valuable range of insight we have available within the mia network. We caught up with St Martin-in-the-Fields' events sales manager Andrew Papworth to find out his thoughts on the industry, trends and challenges for 2020. 

Describe your day to day duties

A mix of talking to clients, show rounds and responding to enquiries. In 2020 my focus is on our commercial strategy, updating our spaces and developing the team.

How long have you worked in the sector?

I have worked in the venue hire and events sector for just over 10 years now.

When and why did you decide to join the mia?

We are incredibly proud of the facilities we provide at St. Martins and as a result thought we should be accredited – we only joined last year. We offer a venue that is fully accessible, that believes in quality in both spaces and service and is fully up to code in regards to compliance and conduct.

What is exciting you about the meetings and events industry at the moment?

From my point of view, the industry is always exciting because of the clients my team and I look after on a day to day basis. No day is ever the same and no event is ever the same come to think of it.

What do you think are the greatest challenges that the industry is currently facing?

In some respects a lot of the events industry still feels very formal and staying current is a challenge. The team and I at St Martin’s are like a family and when clients hold their events with us we welcome them into that world. We are always open, honest, personable and try to get away from corporate thinking. We like to think that we have modernised our processes so as a result offer a more personalised service.

 What’s your favourite meeting destination?

It’s not really about the place it’s about what the place stands for. I want to make sure that a space is sustainable, welcoming and ideally gives back in some way. Here at St Martin’s our profits support the church, it’s contribution to culture and its work with homeless and vulnerable people across the UK.
